Silberpfeile @ Goodwood
Perhaps you already heard, but for those who didn't we have a great announcement; at the Goodwood Revival this year in September there will be an array of pre-war Silberpfeile racing around the Goodwood race course. Silberpfeile? Well, Silver Arrows, German pre-war race machinery of course. Audi (Auto Union) and Mercedes-Benz will bring a vast number of their beautiful machinery to the track. Not for a demonstration but to actually partake in a proper race at race speeds. Never since the 1939 Yugoslav Grand Prix were so many Silberpfeile seen together in one single race. As you might understand, even for the average petrolhead this is a special moment, imagine (or better not) what this event will do to my trousers and those of other hard-line car anoraks! Mercedes-Benz will bring their W25, W125, W154 and W165 cars while Audi will bring some Auto Union C- and D-Types. The cars will be up against other period machinery like ERAs, MGs, Rileys and, let's hope, some of the pre-war Alfa Romeos and Maseratis turn up as well.
Of course, there is a bit of a nasty taste to those Silberpfeile as well, as they were supported financially and misused for propaganda by what is probably the cruelest regime the world has ever seen, no expense was spared to have these German machines crush just about all other Grand Prix participants. Bar for the odd Alfa, no other car of the period, and certainly not the ancient British Grand Prix machinery was up to these 600 hp monsters. This year though it might be the other way round. While the ERAs and MGs of the era still race around British tracks frequently, Audi and Mercedes-Benz have experienced lots of issues evertime they fire up these pieces of antique. But when they do fire up they are a huge treat, just have a look at the following video (there is some later machinery in there btw), hopefully you will understand what I have been on about the last 329 words.
