Question: Is the Fiat 124 Spider Abarth the coolest police car ever?
Always being under the impression that the Dutch national police squad (to be precise the KLPD) only ever used Porsches (like this one here) as their motorway stormer I was surprised to bump into a few pictures of a Fiat 124 Spider Abarth kitted out as a proper police car. Story goes that the dutch police bought two of these Spiders in 1974 for a trial to see if they would be suitable as a fast car for motorway patrols and so on. In the end the police decided to go for the Porsche option (which was faster and in their eyes more practical and less susceptible to depreciation). The Fiats patrolled the Dutch roads up to 1977 after which they were pensioned off. According to sources the two cars were on the Dutch Fiat 124 Spider register for years but have since vanished without a trace. Photos are also rare, apparently the ones in this post are one of the few ones left. Click read more to see some more.Add a comment
Question: Ling-Po or a Golf?
This time the answer to the question is easy; both! All the way back in the 80s Volkswagen advertised their leasing scheme in Germany with advert you see above. It tells the story of Herr Kröger who was faced with either buying an exotic woman or a new VW Golf, but thanks to the 'great' VW leasing scheme he was able to afford both, or as the ad puts it: 'Golf geleast. Frau gekauft.' Obviously, this sounds pretty cringeworthy nowadays with emancipation having progressed enormously and political correctness being the prominent force of reason. Could you imagine VW advertising like this these days? Impossible of course, this kind of tong-in-cheek gimmickry would be a step too far, putting finance for a car on the same level as a woman. This comes even more apparent when you read on, and see what Herr Kröger has to tell us: 'With the money that I saved, I could afford Ling-Po [the exquisite piece of exotica you see in the background]. Since then home time is double the fun.' I guess you can see there is an issue with this ad, though brilliantly thought up, not transferable to 2012. Shame really, wouldn't it be interesting to be able to put out something like this these days and stir things up a little (and receive huge brand awareness in the process) without being branded female-unfriendly by something like the International Alliance for Women? Whichever way you look at it it couldn't be used anyway, as it has been done already, but we should comfort ourselves with the fact that this is a classic ad, an ad that reflected an era in which finance started to make everything possible. From buying cars, to cheap flights and buying women from the other side of the planet..Add a comment
Question: what's the best car to pose in front of?
Universally liked, a 911 might be a very good candidate to answer the question, as is the case with this photo taken outside of the Zandvoort circuit along the dutch coastline in the summer of 1974. Especially so because the guy in the photo called 'Roland', poses with a Carrera 2.7 RS. I'm pretty sure this Porsche Carrera 2.7 RS is the real deal, considering it is highly unlikely that someone with a brand-new and expensive run-of-the-mill 911 would go through all the trouble to widen its arches and so on, while Porsche still produced the 2.7 RS for a good price in 1974. Questionable is, though, the taste of the original owner, red wheels on a green body? And what's with the red stripes on the hatch, roof and the rear duck-tail? Must've been a special order vehicle through Porsche's personalisation division (surely they had that already in 1974), I can't imagine Porsche would've put this on the option list. In a way though, it makes it unique, special, which must be the main arguement for being the best car to pose in front of. It certainly was in 1974, when the only thing more impressive to pose in front of would be some Ferraris or Lamborghinis, but then again those would make you look a bit of a tit. Those were poster cars for children, Porsches are for the real world, for normal guys, like Roland.Add a comment
Question: what's the best car to go ice racing with?
We've devised a new little category here, simply called 'Question:', from now on we will have some short ramblings on the extremely important questions in a petrolheads' life. Questions that come up in our minds when walking through the city, the countryside or when we are using public transport (and can only dream about using proper transport). Questions that could come up could include: 'What car do we need if we want to play Roxy Music whilst driving?' or 'What would be the best car to be sick in?' You get the idea, if you're reading this pokey little motoring blog, you've probably had similar questions come up. Today; 'what's the best car to go ice racing with?'Add a comment
